Special Icons
The following icons may appear on various screens, depending on if they apply to the current data.
Popup Lists and Windows
Some buttons such as those for selecting parents, siblings or spouses generate a popup list of names on
the screen. When one of these lists is visible, you can either select one of the people in the list as the focus
person by tapping on their name, or to make the list disappear and go back to what you were viewing you
can just tap on the screen anywhere outside the list.
There are also a few screens that have tap and hold popups that show short blocks of text. In this case, the
popup is only visible while you are holding your stylus on the button. Remove the stylus and the popup
window disappears.
Special Hardware Devices
Some handhelds have special hardware controls such as the PalmOne Tungsten 5-way buttons, the Sony
Jog-Dial and the Garmin iQue. These devices have a button or dial that can be pressed and is called
select, and other controls for up and down, as well as possible right/left or back. GedStar Pro follows the
recommended guidelines in most cases for the use of these controls. The following are some tips on using
them.
In most dialog screen that have a Done button, pressing select will dismiss the dialog as though you
tapped the button. This is useful for backing out of a series of these dialog screens.
If you have not pressed select, the up and down controls are the same as page up and page down.
On a screen with a list of items on it, if you press select, the top item in the list is highlighted.
Pressing up or down moves the selection a line at a time, with scrolling. Pressing select again selects
the highlighted item for displaying, just as if you had tapped it.
To get out of the line-by-line selection mode described above, use the back or left button.
On Tungstens and other devices with the 5-way controls, using left and right in any of the three main
views switches the tabs among the views (if you are not current in the selection mode).
Note: Due to a difference in the way it was implemented, the dial on the Garmin iQue only works in
selection mode on the three main views and the Research Log. Mainly, it will not work in the Pick-List. A
workaround is still under investigation.
