GedStar Pro Handheld User Guide
3
Introduction
This is the User Guide for the handheld PalmOS application portion of GedStar Pro. It is mainly a visual
guide to the various screens and the controls that you will find on them. GedStar Pro follows the
standard PalmOS application interface guidelines with only a few exceptions, so most of what you can do
within this application is the same as for most other PalmOS products.
Before using the handheld application for the first time, it is assumed that you have already converted at
least one of your PC genealogy databases (see the PC User Guide that is also included with the product)
and that you have synced it to your device. The database can be either in the main memory of the
handheld or on a supported memory card – it makes no difference in the operation of the program.
GedStar Pro looks and works the same way on the handheld regardless of which genealogy program or
GEDCOM file the data came from. The main difference will be in the naming of the events and which
events and facts are part of the program’s capabilities.
Requirements
Make sure that your handheld device meets the minimum requirements for running GedStar Pro. The
application will display an error message and fail to start if it detects an incompatible system version.
Palm Handheld requirement
The requirement is:
A handheld device running PalmOS™ V3.5 thru 5.x.
Note: GedStar Pro will operate on PalmOne Treo™ cellular phone devices, but it has not been optimized
to work with some of the Treo’s device-specific features. There are no plans at this time to specifically
support the special features of the Treo devices.
Recommended
The recommended device will have:
Color screen
A removable memory card
People with multiple databases or very large databases will find it necessary to store the converted
database on a memory card to avoid filling up their main memory. One test database with 45,000
individuals and many long notes in it converted to a Palm database size of 16 megabytes.
Power Users
Power users should consider a configuration with:
A handheld running PalmOS™ V5
A hi-res color screen
A screen with an extended 320x480 resolution
16 megabytes or more of local memory
The fast ARM processors on the latest devices will make a big difference in performance.
