GedStar Pro PC Conversion User Guide
4
Log Files
Whenever GedStar Pro does a conversion, it also creates a conversion log file in the installation
directory (usually “C:\Program Files\GedStar Pro”). This file has the same name as the name
of your handheld database and a file type of “.log”. When emailing for technical support, it is
very helpful if you attach this log file to your message.
PalmOS Database Files
The output of the conversion process is a PalmOS database file of type “.pdb”, which is the
standard file extension for this type of file. Ordinarily, GedStar Pro tries to launch the Install
Tool that came with your handheld device’s software. However, if your PC is not configured
correctly, this might now work and you may have to manually install the database file.
The PalmOS database file is created in the directory where GedStar Pro was installed, which by
default is “C:\Program Files\GedStar Pro”. It has the name that you assigned to your database
two ways to install it on your handheld.
Manual Installation with the Install Tool
You can manually run the Install Tool that came with your handheld’s desktop software. This
may vary from brand to brand, but a common menu selection is Start -> Programs -> Palm
Desktop -> Install Tool (or Quick Install for some versions). Use the controls in the Install Tool
to find your converted database and add it to the Hotsync list. If you have a removable memory
card, there is a way in the Install Tool to direct the file to the card instead of main memory.
Install Direct to Memory Card
If you have a memory card reader/writer installed on your PC, you can install the database file by
copying it in Windows Explorer or a similar file manager program. On the memory card, make
sure to copy the database file to the folder named \Palm\Launcher. The file must be in this
directory for GedStar Pro on the handheld to see it.
