GedStar Pro PC Conversion User Guide
10
Photos Page
This tab controls the conversion of photos, with restrictions as noted below.
Supports all common raster graphics types, including JPEG, BMP, TIFF, GIF, PNG, and
PCX.
Not all genealogy programs export their photos in a way that is compatible with GedStar Pro.
Pictures specified in GEDCOM files must use the file link method as opposed to internally-
stored data.
High-resolution photos can only be viewed on a device with a hi-res screen. Low-resolution
pictures can be viewed on any device, but will not look nearly as good.
The Compression Quality setting is a tradeoff between picture quality and size; including
photos can make your resulting PalmOS database grow in size tremendously. For reference,
the Medium setting for a hi-res color photo compresses to about 3500 bytes with decent
viewing quality; Medium-high compresses to about 9K bytes with excellent quality; and the
High setting is about 18K bytes each with only slightly better results then Medium-high.
Low-resolution pictures compress to only about 4000 bytes at the High setting.
The grayscale option works for any device, and is recommended for monochrome devices to
save space. This option must be used for all PalmOS 3.5 devices, even if they have color
screens.
