Download Procedure
All products are downloaded as self-installing executable files. This is the most common format for delivering downloaded software, and this procedure should be familiar to you. The basic steps are as follows:
- When you click on the download link, select Save As from the browser dialog and save the file someplace where you will be able to find it. The Desktop can be convenient for this, but remember to move the file somewhere else after you install the product!
- After the download completes, use the Windows Explorer or My Computer to locate the file that you just downloaded. Double-click it.
- An installation screen should come up, showing the name of the product and prompting you for the next step. Accept the License Agreement and continue with the installation. This takes only a few seconds.
- After the installation completes, you can Hotsync your device in order to install the PalmOS part of the product on your handheld. Your data is not there yet, so you can't try it out just yet.
- On your PC, look in your Start Menu under Start -> All Programs -> GedStar (or GedStar Pro). You will see a shortcut to a PC program named GedStar or GedStar Pro and can run it from there to do your first data conversion. You will also see shortcuts to the documentation in PDF format. Please read that to get a better idea of what you can do with the software.
Be sure to save the original downloaded file somewhere on your system in case you need to reinstall at a later time.

Upgrading to the Latest Version
Anyone who is a registered user of a product — that is, who has purchased a valid registration code — may upgrade to the latest version of the registered product at any time. All that is necessary is to download the latest version from the Product Download Page and run the installation procedure again.
There are no free upgrades across products. That is, GedStar Pro is not an upgrade of GedStar Basic. However, special offers are often available to move to a newer product offering.
Free Trials
All products are available as a free trial, and will operate for a limited time period. There are no special free-trial versions of the products.
A free trial consists of a fully-functional version of the product that is installed without a registration code. You will be reminded as the trial period elapses, and at the end you can choose to purchase a registration code. After receiving your code, it is not necessary to download or install the product again; simply enter your code and it will continue to work on your PC and handheld.
Registration Codes
The product must have a registration code entered in order to continue functioning after the trial period expires. For GedStar Basic and GedStar-Plus, the code is entered in the handheld application; for GedStar Pro, it is entered in the PC application.
In either case, the registration code is "permanent" unless unless you completely uninstall the software. As long as you do your version upgrades by installing the new version on top of the previous version, your registration will remain intact. Otherwise, you will have to re-enter it, as you will if you get a new handheld or a new PC (or reformat your hard drive, etc.).
Product Updates
Be sure to check the Product Update Page occasionally to see if there is a "patch" available for your product. Fixes for particular problems are often posted there until they are later rolled into a new full version of the product.
