Product Details for GedStar Basic
GedStar Basic is an application for handheld devices (PDAs and smartphones) for the purpose of viewing genealogy data that is natively stored in a program on the user's PC. There is a conversion program component, installed on the PC, that converts data from a GEDCOM 5.5 file into a PalmOS database file that can be synced to the handheld and viewed there.
The data conversion and processing is one-way only; data cannot be modified on the handheld and directly synced back to the PC in any way.
Handheld Device Requirements
The only requirement is that the device be running PalmOS™ V3.1 or later. This covers all devices from the Palm IIIx and Palm V up to the latest handhelds, including all devices from Palm, PalmOne, Sony, Handspring, and Garmin. This product, however, is not particularly optimized for the newest devices and does not support their newer features or controls.
The handheld requirements to run GedStar are as follows:
- The application itself takes about 100K bytes of main memory.
- The genealogy database size is completely determined by the amount of data being converted and the options selected. However, it averages about 100 bytes per person plus the length of any long notes or memos if included. The database can be stored on a removable memory card or in main memory.
PC Requirements
- The recommended operating system is Windows XP.
- GedStar Basic is not supported on Windows Vista. There will not be any future updates for this product.
There is no support for other computers or operating systems such as Linux or Macintosh.
Genealogy Software Requirements
- The minimal requirement is to use a genealogy program that can export a file in GEDCOM 5.5 format. All known PC-based genealogy programs meet this requirement.
